What is the 3-2-1 backup rule?

The 3-2-1 backup rule means: 3 copies of your data, on 2 different media types, with 1 stored offsite. For example: original data on your server (1), a local NAS backup (2), and a cloud backup (3 - stored offsite). This ensures that a single failure — hardware failure, fire, or ransomware — can't destroy all copies.

What's the difference between RTO and RPO?

Recovery Time Objective (RTO) is how quickly you need to be operational after an outage. Recovery Point Objective (RPO) is how much data you can afford to lose (e.g., if you can only afford to lose 4 hours of data, your RPO is 4 hours). BitBlockIT designs backup solutions to meet your specific RTO and RPO requirements.

How often should backups run?

Critical data should be backed up at minimum daily — for many businesses, continuous or hourly backups are more appropriate. BitBlockIT sets backup frequency based on your RTO/RPO requirements and data change rate. We also test restoration quarterly to ensure backups are actually recoverable.
